COLLAGE FOR RESISTANCE
The world feels scary. Divided. Lonely. This project is meant to combat that feeling, even just a little bit.
often Fascism: a populist political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual, that is associated with a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, and that is characterized by severe economic and social regimentation and by forcible suppression of opposition.
Europe is shifting, politically and culturally. In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in fascist behaviors: escalating anti-immigration policies, enduring imperial power structures, and the criminalisation of journalists, scientists, and researchers. These should be alarm bells for anyone who values democracy, but the silence is striking. Why?
Across the people I meet, politically engaged or not, one thing is constant: fear. It shows up in different ways, but it’s there. This fear has numbed, angered, and isolated us. And for me, as both an artist and a human being rooted in community, the response became clear: connection.
It may sound simple, but being truly heard and listening to others can be a powerful antidote to division and loneliness.
For this project, I sat down with people I knew and strangers alike. Using collage, an art form rooted in antifascist history, we kept our hands busy, making space for honest conversation. Those conversations now live on in the work we created together.
Sometimes we stand in the streets, arm in arm, fighting.
Sometimes we sit on the floor, collaging, still fighting.
